Carroll Announces Increase in National Merit Semifinalists

Carroll ISD held a special recognition for students who participated in the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program during the October 22, 2012 School Board Meeting (a video is posted below). This year, Carroll ISD reported an increase in National Merit Semifinalists. Over 1.5 million students nationwide took the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in October, 2011 and based on their test scores, entered into the National Merit Program.

13 Carroll Dragons were named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists and will continue to compete for a National Merit Scholarship to be awarded next spring. The students are among 1,600 high performers nationwide. Only Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship competition and advance to Finalist standing by meeting a number of additional requirements. This year’s National Merit Semifinalists are: Nida Ahmed, Nicholas Booth, Clare Brown, Neha Jain, Kristen La, Gregory Lang, Eunice Lee, Hope Miller, Danielle Rodriguez, Yashas Singri, Ashley Vu, Hannah White and Colton Williams. National Merit Scholar Semifinalists placed among the top half percent of students who took the qualifying test. Finalists will be announced in late January.

40 Carroll students were named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Commended students are recognized as having exceptional academic promise. The 34,000 Commended Students placed among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the PSAT during their junior year. The students who are recognized as Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit scholarships, but represent some of the best and brightest minds in the country as demonstrated by their outstanding performance in this highly competitive program. Carroll ISD’s Commended Students for this year are: Amelia Ahner, Ammar Ansari,Kaylyn Buckley, Tanner Brennan, Aaron Bicart, Elizabeth Baser, Jeehyn H. Bae, Matthew Carson, Claire Credighton, Paulette Cunningham, Austin Deters, Nicholas Fisher, Joseph Formella, Suzanna Foss, Matthew Friske, Kumali Haider, MacGregor Hall, Sonia Hegde, Aaron Ireland, Kaci Lambeth, Joseph Leonard, Kate Lewis, Haowei Li, Nicholas Lowrimore, Lauren Lunden, Lindsey Lunden, Luke Miller, Vighnesh Nair, Jared Neeley, Sarah Nichols, Levi Osburn, Krishna Paranandi, Andrew Petty, Miranda Roberts, Yasaman Sahba, Alexandra Salanty, Alison Savage, Regan Talley, Edward Van Niman and Brittni Watkins.

The four students are: Elizabeth Baser, Joseph Formella, Amy Grice and Danielle Rodriguez. The National Hispanic Recognition Program identified academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Each year, the National Hispanic Recognition Program honors nearly 5000 of the highest-scoring students from the approximately 235,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT.  Although this recognition doesn’t provide a financial reward it is an important academic recognition and achievement.
