Dawson band students and directors are celebrating a recent round of successful competitions. On the morning of Monday, May 6, Members of the DMS Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble competed at the Peak Performance Festival in Denton. Both bands performed their contest programs. Symphonic Band played “St. Petersburg March”, “Knights of Dunvegan” and “Portsmouth Reflection”. The Wind Ensemble played “Prestissimo”, “Blue and Green Music” and “Elements”. All three judges gave both bands straight ones and outstanding comments.

Earlier this month, the DMS Concert Band competed at the Beach Within Reach Festival. The event was held on Friday, May 3 at Haltom High School. With help from some members of the DMS Symphonic Band, DMS Wind Ensemble and even students from the EIS Beginner Band the DMS Concert Band performed “General Greene March” by John Edmondson, “Egyptique” by William Owens and “Ghost Dancing” by Brant Karrick. The program was the most difficult any DMS Concert Band has attempted. According to the judges, the band performed marvelously and received straight ones . The students also finished fourth out of 15 sub non-varsity groups to compete at the festival.

Thursday, March 28, the Dawson Wind Ensemble traveled to Frisco to compete at the annual Region 24 UIL Concert and Sightreading competition held at Wakeland High School.

Directors say the band performed at a very high level and received the coveted Sweepstakes award, receiving straight ones (Superior rating) from all six judges. The band performed the school’s most difficult program to date, including “Prestissimo March” by Karl King, ”Blue and Green Music” by Samuel Hazo and “Elements, Petite Symphony” by Brian Balmages.

All three judges were impressed with the musical abilities and technique of the students.

“Percussion is really doing a SUPER JOB!!! Good work!” read one judge’s notes.

Another judge’s comment read, “Great demonstration of musical understanding, ensemble sound and ensemble awareness!”

After their stage performance, the band headed into the band hall to prepare for the sightread. This year’s piece received a lot of talk as it is very unusual and has a lot of “traps”. Again, the judges were impressed as their comments were recorded.

“Nice job of reading critical notes. Great rhythm and pulse. Awesome directors and students.”

Following the completion of all competing schools’ results, Dawson and four other schools in the competing region received straight ones for both their non-varsity and varsity bands.

DMS Band Director David Stone said, ”That is an incredible accomplishment, as this is one of the top three or four regions in the state.”

Stone added that he, Mr. Guerrero and Ms. Bailey “are so very proud of all the band students at DMS. They have spent countless hours practicing, coming in early for sectionals and staying after-school for playoffs.”

If your child is interested in participating in athletics, cheerleading or drill team next year, CISD requires that they have a current physical. For it to be current for the next school year, the physical must be dated after May 1, 2013. This service is provided for your convenience; however, you may obtain your physical from any Physician, a Physician Assistant licensed by a State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners, a Registered Nurse recognized as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the Board of Nurse Examiners, or a Doctor of Chiropractic. Examination forms signed by any other health care practitioner will not be accepted. Please print the UIL Pre-Participation Physical Examination form and use this form when obtaining a physical for your child.

Tickets are being sold for specific 30 minute time frames. All tickets will be purchased online through the CISD Athletics website. Tickets will go on sale April 1, 2013 and cost $25.00. There is an optional cardiac screening for an additional $20.00, which will need to be purchased at the same time. If you choose to have the cardiac screening, please fill out the waiver form (2nd pg.) and bring it with you to the physical. There will not be refunds if you cannot make your appointment.
