On June 18^th, the Mayor and Council will make appointments to the Building Board of Appeals, Parks and Recreation Board, Planning and Zoning Commission, Southlake Parks Development Corporation, and Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Citizens interested in helping their local government in the areas of regard to park facilities, zoning cases, and commercial or residential development are encouraged to complete an application for a board or commission. Applications may be obtained from the City’s website. Each appointment is for a term of two years.

City Council is looking for committed Citizens to our community. If you desire to serve in this role, please complete an application and send an e-mail (arichardson@ci.southlake.tx.us) or fax (817).748.8270 to the City Secretary’s Office.

Compete against your friends on various inflatables or at 4-on-4 basketball. There will be a live DJ, dancing, entertainment and various contests. Concession items (everything under $2.00) will be sold and T-shirts will also be available to purchase for $10.00 each. To ensure a safe environment, there will be a uniformed DPS officer on site.

CREW members must be Seniors for the 2013-2014 school year. Varsity Mascot ( Charlie) can be a freshman through a senior for the 2013-2014 school year.

Over the past six months, City staff has been working with Miracle League of Southlake and Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation on an agreement for a one lump-sum donation of $100,000 for naming rights to the field for 10 years.

With this donation, the Miracle Field at Bicentennial Park will be named “Texas Rangers Miracle League Field.”

The new baseball field is part of the Phase II plan for Bicentennial Park. The field name will be displayed prominently on one sign at the main entrance to the seating area of the field. Additionally, two Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation logo signs will be displayed and located in each dugout, and three Texas Rangers banners will be displayed and located on the scoreboard.

Join the Bob Jones Nature Center for Great Backyard Bird Count activities February 15-17, 2013. The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual event in association with the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Bird lovers of all ages and skill levels participate in counting birds to assist scientists in developing a “big picture” about what is happening to bird populations locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.

Photo Contest Deadline March 16, 2013

The Bob Jones Nature Center photo contest recognizes the best photographs taken at the nature center and preserve. The contest is open to photographers of all skill levels. There are 5 divisions; 2 for children by age and 3 for adults by level of experience and skill. Photos can be of landscapes, wildlife, natural objects, and more. Each entry helps support the nature center. Submitted photos are displayed in the Southlake Library and the Nature Center. Prizes are awarded.

The Southlake Junior Debate Club recently took top prize  in the Colleyville Heritage High School Tournament. The event held Feb. 1-2 was a Novice-Public Forum Debate consisting of 19 teams from area schools.

Nine of those teams were from the Southlake Junior Debate Club.

“The entire tournament was buzzing about our Carroll ISD Middle School students,” said Ellena Prokopeas, coordinator for the Southlake Junior Debate Club.

The students debated five rounds. Three teams advanced to the quarterfinals, members are: Sam Bonham and Jacqueline Prokopeas;  Emma Lin and Priyanka Reddy;  Peter Harris and Samuel Ortiz. One team advanced to the finals and won the round. The winners are: Emma Lin and Priyanka Reddy.

The Scholarship paid $500 directly to TSA, the travel agency coordinating the Study Abroad Program. Victoria also received a certificate of best essay along with the scholarship money.

Victoria is a senior student at CSHS and is currently attends Mr. Johnston’s AP Art History class. She has also attended 3 other AP classes (U.S. History, Psychology and Government). The trip will take place during Spring Break. Victoria says she is very excited to extend her curriculum with Carroll ISD by visiting museums and famous historic sites, enjoying fine dining and shopping, and much more in London and Paris.

The Cheryl Shankman Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded annually to one Carroll ISD sophomore, junior or senior. The scholarship is in memory and honor of Cheryl Shankman. Cheryl was a parent, dedicated educational advocate, volunteer and past president of the Carroll AP Booster Club. She loved to travel, experience other cultures, and challenge herself with continuous learning, both in and out of the classroom.
